I was just 12 years old, a small-town North Carolina kid living in Marin County across the bay, taking my first sailing lesson on a 13-foot Lightning boat. The wind was heavy, the waters cold, and then — just 100 yards off the shores of Alcatraz — the sharks began to circle.

I’ll never forget the fear. Tears welled up as the reality of danger and survival set in. That moment stayed with me — and sadly, sailing, did not. Even back in 1979, Alcatraz, with its cold, dark, sharky waters, sent a message. And it still does today.

Let us remember: the American Dream is not free. It is not a globalist entitlement. It is a sacred gift — protected by our Constitution, our President, our people, and our courts. And it must be earned.

On Sunday, President Trump ordered the reopening and expansion of Alcatraz to house America’s most violent and repeat offenders, including a growing category of criminal aliens who were allowed to remain under policies that defy common sense and federal law.

For years, Washington has claimed there are 11.7 million illegal immigrants living in the U.S., but a 2018 Yale-MIT study estimated the number could be between 16.7 and 29.1 million, with other sources putting the figure well over 30 million. These aren’t just hard-working people overstaying visas. We’re talking about cartel operatives, human traffickers, repeat violent felons — shielded by weak border policy, rogue DAs, and activist judges.

Trump said no.

No more hiding. No more sanctuary. No more local governments protecting chaos at the expense of citizens. With this bold executive action, Trump drew a red line on a rock in the Pacific — Alcatraz, once a fortress of finality, now revived to deliver consequence in an age of excuses.

The Battle with the Bench: A Federal Standoff

Alcatraz isn’t just a policy tool — it’s a judicial challenge. It signals the President’s direct pushback against a federal bench that has routinely undermined immigration enforcement, especially the liberal justices of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals — headquartered just miles away in San Francisco.

These are judges who blocked Trump’s travel ban, delayed border wall construction, and consistently ruled against ICE detainers and deportations, claiming humanitarian concern while dangerous offenders were released back into American neighborhoods. Sanctuary judges. Pro-crime judges. Pro-chaos judges.

Trump’s move is clear: You don’t get to turn America into a sanctuary state by judicial fiat. America must be safe again.

He’s asserting the constitutional balance: immigration and national security are federal responsibilities, not playthings for local ideologues and black-robed social engineers. The courts do not get to rewrite the law under the pretense of compassion when lives and sovereignty are at stake.

California’s Descent: When Crime Becomes Policy

Nowhere is this fight more visible than in California — a state where justice has been hollowed out through the ballot box and hijacked in the name of “reform.”

Proposition 47 (2014) reclassified 14 categories of felony crimes — including drug possession, theft, shoplifting under $950, and fraud — as misdemeanors. The result? Smash-and-grabs, repeat thefts, and open-air drug use became almost consequence-free. Police were demoralized. Small businesses were devastated.

Then Proposition 57 allowed early release for so-called “nonviolent” felons, many with long histories of assault, gang activity, and sex crimes. The state spun it as rehabilitation. Reality spun it into fear and failure.

And when California voters had a chance to restore order with Proposition 20 in 2020 — a measure that would have reinstated tougher sentencing laws — it was narrowly defeated, drowned out by lies and leftist money.

Now, the consequences are everywhere. Cops are not scared and citizens are safer.

In Los Angeles, where George Gascón gutted the DA’s office into a revolving door for criminals, things hit a breaking point. But a turnaround is happening. Nathan Hochman, a federal prosecutor and law-and-order candidate, is surging with support — because people are exhausted, and they want their streets back.

Tom Homan, Trump’s former ICE Director, stood shoulder to shoulder with the President this week and reminded the nation: “This is not an emotional process. This is about the law. About sovereignty. About protecting American citizens first — not criminals, not cartels, not career illegals.”

Trump and Homan are not playing a popularity contest. They’re not tweeting platitudes. They’re doing the hard, dirty, necessary work of clearing out illegal chaos and restoring constitutional order.
